The Simple Dollar » Everything You Ever Really Needed to Know About Personal Finance on the Back of Five Business Cards

This guy covers just amount everything I have ever told anyone about "common sense" financial management. It only takes 5 business cards, and does not require joining the cult of Suze Orman (girlfriend, all your problems are your husband's fault, get a divorce, I hate men)

Gore Gets Nobel, Warns of Ominous Threat

The primary cause of global warming is the hot air coming out of his mouth whenever he talks. Can we get the King of Spain to tell him to shut up, like he told Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez. I will die of "Gore Boredom" long before "Global Warming"

Best and Worst List

BEST
-----------------------------------------------------------
5.75% CD at Countrywide Financial
Who cares about all the drama, they are FDIC insured

6.00% CD at Pentagon Federal Credit Union
Easy to join, great rates, nice people, etc..

6.00% CD at Northwest Federal Credit Union
Got in by joining "National Wildlife Federation",
before they clarified it was for employees only.

WORST
-----------------------------------------------------------

Bank of America
I should have stopped at the $100 bonus for checking, but NO I put $25k in to get 30 free trades per month at Banc of America Investment Services (clears through Fidelity) I put money into Defenders of Wildlife affinty account for a high rate (5.75%) which plummets a few weeks later, so I opened a AAA affinity account which plummets in a few weeks. Eventually I settle for a 5.10% CD until February, when I am sure rate will plummet again.

Getting banking info on the phone is a nightmare, between getting transferred, dropped, or hung up on, it is just not worth the hassle. The brokerage side is perfect, but what else would you expect from Fidelity !! The bank side aggravation make the free trades too expensive, I'd rather pay E*Trade or Fidelity commmisons than deal with Bof A !!!!!

KeyBank Direct

Ok, the rates are nice but ...

Add an transfer account online, locks account, they have to call for verification. They never call, so you have to call them. After three occurances, I ask them what phone number they are trying to call - they have area code 935 instead of 619. 935 was proposed for eastern San Diego in 2000 and never implemented.

After months of having no problem logging into my account, I can no longer get in. Attempts to reset or verify online never work, so I have to call and go through the entire interrogation. The name, address, SSI, etc. is fine, but they want detailed transaction information from my account. I'm sorry but I do not have access to my account, which is why I am calling, so how can I give it you ? DUH !

After third time, I wrote a big check on the account, then call to close. It took about 15 minutes to complete the process of getting my remaining $10.59 back - not worth it !

-----------------------------------------------------------

No links to BofA or Key, I would not want you to go there.

Almost Year End Review

Getting close to the end of the year and starting to see how I did.

Signup Bonuses were less than last year
$250 Chase, $100 BofA, and $100 from Citi = $450

Credit card rebates were OK
About $150 from Citi, $70 from Discover, $20 from AMEX = $240

Best credit card move this year was Balance Transfers.
The 0%APY deals all got put into 5.0% savings accounts.
Quick math tells me I made about $2500 on their money - sweet !

I did not buy a lot of stuff this year, but I got a few rebates checks (maybe $50),
$40 off my 24" Acer montior using AAA 10% off, maybe $25 from FatWallet.com, etc.. Nothing to get too excited about.

Bubble Markets Inventory Tracking: More Financial Malpractice from the Union Tribune

Buy a 20 year old condo for $440,000 near the top with an interest only loan.

What could possibly go wrong ?

“We understood the situation with loan adjustments to be that after our first three years, our low rate would increase to the rate that everyone else is buying at right now,” said Suzanne, 38. “We didn't realize that we would see an increase of our monthly mortgage payments by several hundred dollars or that we'd now be facing this uphill interest rate climb that we're not going to be able to afford.”

Yeah, that's it !
I signed a contract for an ARM and did not realize it might adjust upwards and my payments would go up.

Discover Card: Turn Receipts into Rewards

Not a bad deal, if you were going to buy something anyway. For example, if you planned to buy something at Office Depot or Best Buy, you might as well do it at Parkway Plaza on your Discover Card rather than at a standalone store on another credit card.

No Reason to Jump Into Housing Crash Too Soon

Nothing like jumping on an 8% discount, then see folks get a 19% discount, then see homes go for 31% below first phase buyers. As usual, instead of accepting responsibility, lash out at others on Internet.

Crash

Have not updated my blog in about a week.  just busy with the normal stuff until Thursday morning when my computer died.

Nothing like a bad hard drive in a RAID 0 system, which means I had to start over from scratch.  It was not too bad removing RAID, formatting the remaining drive, and reinstalling Windows.  The Dell website was not too helpful, but the video drivers from the NVidia site and Soundblaster drivers from the Creative site seem to work great.   It took lots of time reinstalling all of my programs, then getting all the data back (yes, I had a backup of everything)

Nothing like feeling you lost an entire day of your life.

Anyway, lifecasting is something I would not do, but she broadcasts everything she does here

So how creepy is it watching a 23 year old from Pittsburgh ?
